The Sleep Appliance

Sleep Appliance FAQ

How exactly does it work?

The sleep appliance works by opening the bite and gently advancing the mandible with interchangeable elastic straps to increase airway space.

What is it made of?

The sleep appliance is very similar to a nightguard. It's made of hypoallergenic material; specifically, a proprietary thermoplastic polymer that delivers superior impact strength at a lower cost.

Will my insurance cover it?

This custom made sleep appliance is only available through medical and dental professionals. Family Dental Care of Fort Smith is one of the few locations that can bill insurance for this product. As with all services, it depends on your insurance, but the likelyhood is higher with us!

How do the straps work?

It increases airway space by advancing the mandible using interchangeable elastic straps. EMA elastic straps come in 9 different lengths and 4 different strengths. The shorter the elastic strap, the farther the mandible is advanced. 36 different straps allow for the most effective repositioning with maximum comfort.

How long does it take to adjust?

Adjustment varies from person to person, but for most people it takes between a day or two to a week. It's very similar to adjusting to a new retainer! It takes very little time and can be extremely beneficial.

How long does it last?

The Sleep Appliance will work for 10 years or more before it needs to be replaced. Our appliances are sturdy and durable, but their overall longevity depends on the individual user. Factors like style, bite, and sleep habits can affect the durability.

Family Dental Care of Fort Smith has many people who are extremely experienced with sleep apnea problems and solutions. If you’ve ever tried a CPAP and had it not work, it’s time to rethink your options!

If you’re sleep apnea is severe enough where you have to use a CPAP, with an oral appliance, many patients have been able to completely ditch the machine! Many consider an oral appliance to be more comfortable to wear than a CPAP mask. There’s no noise, no hoses, and it’s easy to clean and take care of!

The frustrating, irritating nights spent tossing and turning, can finally be behind you! A full, restful, nights sleep is possible!

bacteria and even mold.

No threat of waking up other people

Helps to reduce your snoring or even eliminate it completely

Small and discreet

No risk of mold

Save money on your electricity bill

Easy to clean, simply brush it in the morning when you brush your teeth!

Easy to get used to, comfortable after the adjustment period

I had a CPAP that was very uncomfortable, and I simply couldn't wear it. I made the investment to get a sleep appliance and it has changed my life. I now have an easy to wear, snap in, no air hose sleep appliance that I can carry in my pocket if I want to. I finally get a real peaceful sleep
